About COFAM

COFAM consists of seven faculty associations that have partnered with one another to create a collaborative forum. While each union retains its autonomy and independence, COFAM exists to amplify our collective voice on issues that affect faculty broadly, and to foster solidarity among McGill’s academic staff.

The Mandate

COFAM is a confederation of equals, not a single or corporate body. COFAM’s strength depends on how well information, decisions, and ideas move between its many parts. The Coordinator is the connective tissue that makes that possible: the person who ensures that the Presidents and their Executives, the Bargaining Committee, the Mobilization Committee and the various mobilization working groups, the Communications Team, the Pension Working Group and the Strike Committee are always working on the basis of shared understandings and strategies, so that all are rowing in the same direction.

This is fundamentally a relational role. The Coordinator does not sit at the centre of any one function — bargaining, communications, pensions, or external relations — so much as at the intersection of all of them, translating what happens in one room into something the rest of the Confederation can act on. Success in this role would mean no affiliate ever being caught off guard, no working group operating in isolation, and no ally organization left wondering where COFAM stands. The successful candidate would join during a time of intensive bargaining and member mobilization, and would be expected to assist with mobilization and possible job action.

Core Responsibilities

The Coordinator’s duties fall into four connected areas. In each, the throughline is the same: keep the right people informed, aligned and able to work and act together to advance the public mission of COFAM’s faculty associations.

Linking the Bargaining Table to Membership

  • Participate in bargaining sessions and translate what happens there into clear updates for the Presidents, Executive Committees, COFAM’s Mobilization Committee, Communications Team, Pension Working Group, and ultimately the members of COFAM’s faculty associations.
  • Help ensure that positions developed at the table reflect, and are understood across, all of COFAM’s faculty associations.
  • Support the drafting of collective agreement language on shared priorities.

Linking COFAM’s Internal Bodies to One Another

  • Ensure that outcomes and decisions from bargaining, the pensions working group, and the mobilization and communications teams reach every relevant COFAM entity without getting lost in translation or otherwise misunderstood.
  • Draft reports, communiqués, and mobilization materials that give COFAM member associations and the wider McGill community a consistent, shared picture of where things stand.
  • Help faculty associations and COFAM entities stay connected on bargaining and administrative needs, including coordinating regular contact between the local bargaining teams of faculty associations and participating in the periodic meetings of treasurers.

Linking Members to Pension Advocacy

  • Serve as a channel between COFAM’s Pension Working Group and the faculty associations, so pension-related developments and decisions are understood and actionable at the association level.
  • Connect members and associations with questions regarding pensions to the people who can answer them and ensure that those answers are communicated to membership broadly.

Linking COFAM to the Broader Labour Landscape

  • Act as COFAM’s point of contact with FQPPU and CAUT, representing COFAM’s faculty associations and liaising with both FQPPU and CAUT.
  • Build and maintain relationships with other unions and associations within McGill, so COFAM’s faculty associations are coordinated with — not siloed from —its closest allies.
  • Represent the interests of COFAM’s faculty associations in conversations with other labour and academic bodies as needed.

Qualifications

  • University degree (graduate degree preferred) in communications, labour relations or equivalent experience in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated experience working within or alongside a union, faculty association, or federated organization, where coordinating across multiple internal entities and constituencies was part of the role (ideally including work on bargaining and/or communications).
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with demonstrated ability to communicate complex developments or technical material to broad audiences, including in clear, member-facing updates (videos, reports, newsletters).
  • Comfort acting as a liaison among groups with different priorities and no single, hierarchical chain of command.
  • Bilingual (English/French) required, given that COFAM’s faculty associations work within Quebec’s labour and legislative context, that French is the first language of many sister unions in Quebec and the FQPPU, and that some of COFAM’s own associations work bilingually.
  • Familiarity with mobilization or membership software (e.g., Solidarity.tech, Mobilis).

Compensation and start date

Compensation will range from $90,000 – $105,000 commensurate with experience, plus benefits. The anticipated start date is November 9, 2026, but flexible.
